RESEARCH INTERESTS

Motivation:

Brown and beige adipocytes regulate whole-body metabolic and energy homeostasis through glucose and lipid utilization as well as endocrine functions. Their activity is inversely correlated with the prevalence of diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. However, brown and beige adipocytes are scarce in humans. Our laboratory aims to investigate strategies to increase and/or activate these adipocytes and apply the findings to modulate metabolism for the treatment of metabolic diseases and cancer.

Aims:

  • Identify genes and drugs that promote stem cell browning using high-throughput drug libraries and CRISPR/Cas gene screens.
  • Apply targeted nanoparticle delivery systems for cell-, gene-, or drug-based therapies to activate brown and beige adipocytes.
  • Investigate how brown and beige adipocytes inhibit cancer and fatty liver disease through metabolic and immune regulation.
