Overview
With the sequencing of the human genome in the 20th century, the biotechnology industry underwent a revolutionary transformation. To advance biomedical and biotechnological research in Taiwan, the Genomics Research Center (GRC) was officially established in January 2003 under the leadership of former Academia Sinica President Academician Yuan-Tseh Lee and the founding Task Force. Academician Chi-Huey Wong, former Academia Sinica President, served as the GRC’s inaugural director, guiding the development of research priorities, recruiting leading scientists, overseeing the construction of the research facility, and equipping it with state-of-the-art instruments and technologies. The GRC building was completed and inaugurated in November 2004.
During its preparatory phase, the GRC established 6 divisions: Functional Genomics, Chemical Biology, Genomic Medicine, Bioinformatics, Key Technology Development, and Biotechnology Incubation Center. In 2004, the Genomic Medicine division was renamed the Cellular and Molecular Medicine. In 2009, the GRC consolidated six divisions into four: Chemical Biology, Medical Biology, Physical and Computational Genomics, and Biotechnology Incubation Center. In 2021, the Biotechnology Incubation Center has merged with BioHub Taiwan, National Biotechnology Research Park.
One of the GRC’s key strengths is its diverse and interdisciplinary research teams. Our principal investigators come from a broad spectrum of fields, including chemistry, biology, medicine, bioengineering, information science, and nanotechnology. The complementarity of their expertise fosters a highly collaborative and innovative research environment, enabling groundbreaking advances across multiple disciplines. Currently, the GRC consists of three main research divisions:
- Chemical Biology Division
To utilize chemical and biological approaches to investigate and solve critical challenges in living systems. - Medical Biology Division
To focus on translational medicine, including studies of cancer stem cells, the molecular regulation of normal stem cells, molecular biomarkers, and immunobiology. - Physical and Computational Genomics Division
To advance metabolism-related research and establish a metabolomics analysis and measurement platform.
