Physical & Computational Genomics Division
This Division has two major goals. One is technologyand instrumentation development and the other iscomputational bioinformatic technology development. For physical genomics program, it aims to developnew tools with improved sensitivity and resolution foruse in studying the dynamics of complex biologicalsystems. Current interests include developmentof biological mass spectrometry, microarrayand nanotechnology for genomic and proteomicresearch, biomarker discovery, biophotomics forsingle cell research, fabrication of biological andbiomimetic materials and development of functionalsupramolecular structures for disease diagnosis.For computational genomics, the aim is to pursuefunctional and evolutionary genomics as wellas structural informatics, using a combination oftools and resources from bioinformatics, computersciences, statistics, molecular biology, biochemistry,genetics and evolution. It focuses on developmentof methods for analysis of genomic sequences,prediction of alternative splicing, identificationof gene regulation pathways, study of proteininteraction networks, study of regulatory networks,structure-based molecular modeling and design,and prediction of pharmacology. The long-termgoal is to develop computational models for usein understanding cellular functions and otherbiomedical applications such as in silico drugprediction.
During the next three to five years, we will continue tofocus our effort in the above areas. We believe thereis a good possibility we will be in a leading positionworldwide in mass spectrometry development andbiomarker discovery, comparative genomics ofhuman and apes, and platform and technology buildup for single cell transcriptomics and proteomics.
