RESEARCH INTERESTS:

Molecular interactions of viruses, satellite RNAs and host plants

Satellite RNAs (sat RNAs) share little sequence homology with their helper viruses, but depend on the viral genomic RNAs for replication, encapsidation and movement. Studies of subviral RNAs have had enormously impact on virus biology, pathology and biochemistry and also illuminate biotechnology aspect as well. We have used a satellite RNA associated with bamboo mosaic virus (satBaMV), encoding a 20 kDa nonstructural protein (P20), as a model to analyze the interactions between the virus, subviral RNAs and host plant that lead to virus resistance. Currently we have focused on:
I. Molecular mechanism of satBaMV-mediated interference of BaMV replication
II. Movement of satellite RNA in the infected plants
III. Development of BaMV- and satBaMV-based platform technology
